This week was about love of hobbies; I’m talking true passion. And Tara LOVES to dance; it is her ‘greatest joy and passion’. Back in December we had a chat so I could learn more about her and how she approaches and views dance.
Her mother inspired her to dance and she’s been doing it since she was a kid. She also said her style of dance is about physicalizing human emotion and that music inspires her. To her dance is about connecting with people, empathy, being more connected to herself, and showing others their own beauty.
Some of her favorite choreographers are @galenhooks, @jojogomezxo, @traviswall, @alblackstonechoreo, @nicklanz04. Her favorite styles of dance are contemporary, west coast, and dance that is personal and conveys vulnerability. In her future, she wants to choreograph and use dance to help people.
In order to better visualize how I wanted to go about our shoot, I asked her some questions kind of unrelated to dance. Favorite fruit: grapefruit. Favorite food: curry. If she could be a food, she’d be a corn tamale. Of the taste buds, she described her dance as spicy and sometimes a little umami. I asked her to pick a food (or drink) and she chose water because it is something that is universal, life-giving, powerful, and cleansing. With all of this information, I wanted my frames to capture that fluid, tangy, spicy energy that Tara has.
Even better, during our shoot, she said she felt like a kid dancing; no pressure, no judgement, and simply free to dance with the innocence of a child. Thank you Tara for your beautiful, genuine soul.
Thank you for inviting me into your space and allowing me to capture your energy. Thank you for you.
